Al is from a large Navajo family in Winslow, Arizona, where he still works. His parents were ranchers. Al learned silver-smithing from his uncle, Colbert Joe, Sr. It was a way to earn spending money while attending college.
After opening his own workshop in the 70’s, he employed other silversmiths to help meet the tremendous demand for Indian jewelry. Later, wanting to improve his skills, he took classes at Northern Arizona University, learning many new techniques.
Al creates pieces in both traditional and contemporary styles. He is a master metal-smith, showing great innovation when working in silver or gold.
